Position :  Communications Officer

Duty Station : Baghdad, with travel to Anbar, Basra, Muthanna and Ninewa 

Function prerequisites:

The Communications Officer is part of the Programme team and the position is managed by the Programme Coordinator. The position requires:

  •  Good written and spoken English and Arabic
  • Excellent analytical, researching and writing skills
  • Experience with photography and/or videography
  • Familiarity with editing and design software such as Adobe InDesign, Premiere, Publisher, Photoshop (it is not necessary to have experience with all these programmes, but experience with some is required)
  • Experience in managing social media accounts and messaging
  • Proven experience in writing updates and articles for (online) publication
  • Experience in working with and engaging local/national media
  • Good translation and interpretation skills (Arabic to English / English to Arabic)

 The position is for the NPA Iraq programme at large and as such requires extensive travel to field locations in Anbar, Basra, Muthanna and Ninewa, this may include overnight stays due to travel distance and work

General responsibilities:

  • Work within the framework of NPA core values
  • Act as an ambassador for NPA, through professionalism and conduct

  • Maintain and care for all equipment issued by NPA and for any loss or damage, you will be liable for repair or replacement
  • Follow all verbal and/or written instructions, unless in direct violation of safety and duty of care
  • Ensure a safe workplace and protect all staff and equipment from damage/ injury

Responsibilities:

  • Work according to the Programme Communication Plan as developed by the Programme Coordinator in liaison with the Project DPM’s, maintain and adjust the plan accordingly.
  • Create a range of communication documents and content, including case studies and impact stories, factsheets, infographics, written articles, social media posts, sections for reports and proposals, photos, videos, etc.
  • Conduct and record interviews with staff and/or beneficiaries about NPA’s work
  • Gather and take photos, and produce video content
  • Gather input for and write case studies and stories about NPA’s operations and its impact on local communities
  • Create and post social media updates
  • Provide written and verbal translations from English/Arabic or Arabic/English of administrative or technical NPA documents,
  • government letters/documents, visits, interviews, meetings and presentations
  • Provide advice, training and support for programme national staff whom are willing to participate in media news interviews or stories
  • Edit content provided by operational staff to use in reports, case studies, and publications
  • Support with maintaining a database of all visual materials produced by NPA Iraq such as photos, videos, info graphics, logos, etc.
  • Provide prompt feedback when reviewing beneficiaries stories developed by the project communications focal points in a short timeframe
  • Support with the writing of press releases and work with area/project staff and programme team to develop and maintain relationships with national and local media to highlight programme activities, and cultivate relationships to facilitate media coverage of ongoing activities and results
  • Help staff and beneficiaries where appropriate to prepare for media interviews ensuring that all agreed guidelines and protocols are observed using a standardized questionnaire
  • Support with the design and production of donor visibility materials including: leaflets, booklets, banners, brochures, t-shirts, caps, stationary, etc.
  • Conduct regular field visits to observe and document operational activities and the results in targeted communities
  • Support and promote internal communication between different departments and field locations
  • Support the programme to implement and adhere to NPA’s national (Iraq) and global communication strategy
  • Any other duties as tasked by NPA’s Programme Coordinator

Required Qualifications:

Education

Must have:

  • Bachelor degree in relevant field (or any Bachelor degree combined with extensive relevant communications experience)

Desirable:

  • Additional diplomas or training courses in media, public relations, communications, design

Experience:

Must have:

  • 2 – 5 years' experience in communications and/or public relations

Desirable:

  • Experience in working with International NGO`s

Other Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with editing and design software such as Adobe InDesign, Premiere, Publisher, Photoshop (it is not necessary to have experience with all these programmes, but experience with some is required)

Personal Competencies:

  • Ability to closely work with and coordinate with national and international personnel from different backgrounds
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to take good decisions based on judgment
  • Ability to plan ahead and manage multiple donor reporting requirements.
